The Alternative TOTP Canon #40: Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe
Clown wig and Groucho glasses/tache set, Bardot blonde wig, interpretative boa waving, shouting. That's the spirit! Watch for the guitarist diving into the crowd and the crowd throwing him straight back onto the stage.
I have fond/tragic memories of this song because I'd taken a shine to a kooky indie chick in the sixth form and our first conversation was about our shared liking of this song. Imagine if it had gone any further, that would have been our song.
There was an interview with Whale on the radio at the time where the songwriter expressed his embarrassment that there was no such thing as a "slobo babe".
What he meant was a Sloane babe, as in what used to be called a Sloane Ranger (you remember, Audrey was called one once on To the Manor Born), but he didn't have the heart to change it once it was recorded.

BEST BIT - The guitarist eating the microphone.
