The Alternative TOTP Canon #18: Marillion - Lavender

He'd be miming anyway! He's led the audience in under false pretences!

Ah, good old Mr.Dick - he always made an effort. 'Incommunicado' was my favourite, there's a top tune.

Shame the combined wit and wisdom of Read and Wright (ha ha, do you see?!) couldn't get the name of the song right, even though it wasn't difficult. Edmonds wouldn't have made such a basic error. And he was better at doing Saturday morning TV. And radio. Basically, what I'm saying is that Mike Read is an idiot.

don't forget the TOTP performance for "punch and judy" when fish jabbed his fist in the air very time he mimed the word "punch" - an amusing if rather obvious piece of stagecraft...

also when he appeared on the aforementioned mike read's "pop quiz", the producers had the bright idea of putting him on the same team as prince's talentless sidekick cat. sadly though they couldn't find (or persuade) any more pop stars named after creatures to appear...

Presumably this would have been around the time of Cat's extremely shoddy 'Catwoman' single? It was a massive No.75 hit IIRC.

Clearly the producers weren't trying very hard on the animal theme though. Adam Ant should've been a shoo-in. Then there's Rat Scabies, Chris Rea (Rhea) and, um, someone out of A Flock of Seagulls. There, sorted!

Are you sure it was Pop Quiz? That wasn't still going in 1989 was it?

Neil Barker.

It was Juke Box Jury, because I've just acquired the Radio Times that proudly promotes it.

It *was* Jukebox Jury - and the Daily Mirror TV listings claimed that it would feature "Cat from Red Dwarf". I was rather disappointed when it turned out to be Catherine Glover.

Now was "Catwoman" a better single than "Tongue Tied?"
