TOTP 28/7/77 - the best of the rundown photos

Fred Smith wasn't really male model material, but this result of a rehearsal room surprise shot seems unfair:

The accuracy unit of OK, You Win and Ma Boney fame strike again, and this wasn't even her first hit:

A lovely family photo:

Just think, if there'd been a couple of old dears already waiting the opportunity would have been lost:

Life lesson: you cannot resemble a well drilled fighting machine while wearing yellow drapes.

even though the correct spelling of candi's surname was "staton", as far as i'm aware it's pronounced "statton" rather than "stayton" as the spelling suggests (correct me if i'm wrong) so anyone who hadn't seen her name in print would assume it had two s's in it (not that i'm condoning the captioner - had it been me i would have checked rather than make assumptions)... oops - i've just noticed they've spelt her first name incorrectly as well, for which there's no excuse other than ignorance!

The funny thing about Candy/i Stat(t)on is that even though they have ample space they have run it as one word - Candystatton. Sounds like a rival to Carmalite.

I thought they had misspelled Ms Streisand's name at number 29 but I checked and it actually is spelled with only two A's unlike Barbara Windsor who has three (if you'll pardon the expression). BAR-BRA. Sounds like a lingerie outlet.

Fleetwood Mac and number 30. Christine Mcvie looks like a young Victoria Wood channeling Lesley Judd. And I like the fact that all we get to see of Lindsay Buckingham is his nose and bearded chin.

The Floaters at number 16. Can't they afford a colour photo? They could at least have tinted it like The Detroit Emeralds. But why are a group called The Floaters lying down, that's the opposite of floating isn't it?

Just looked them up and found out that two of The Floaters (James Mitchell and Marvin Willis) used to be in The Detroit Emeralds. So in 1977 both groups were in the charts at the same time. Feel The Need was a re-recording so presumably the Emeralds carried on with new members and it's their new version that's in the chart.

Actually it seems there were two Detroit Emeralds going at one point, both featuring a founder brother, a kind of Cain and Abel of Hi Records stock. At this stage Abe Tilmon had sacked off his brother Ivory from the band and brought in three ringers while Mitchell (Willis wasn't an Emerald as far as I can tell, the bulk of their hits were as a trio) formed the Floaters. And now Ivory and Mitchell are in a reformed cabaret Detroit Spinners with a friend.

No mention of the scary topless shot of Johnnie Taylor from last year, first seen almost subliminally at number 30.

Nothing to do with this news, but big revelations - someone's got the Contempt 7"! And there's a bit in the middle Pops edited out, as well as the ending! And someone else online reckons it was a Noel Edmonds record of the week! (And somewhere else claims Chris Spedding may have session guitared on it, but it doesn't seem his style)

Sorry, didn't notice the heading mentioning that the pics were all from the same edition of TOTP. Senior moment! Johnnie Taylor was still scary, mind you!

Nothing to with this news also, but in this week's Radio Times letters page, "The BBC tells us that it has no immediate plans to show the 1978 series, but is keeping that decision under review."

Just seen the bad news in the Radio Times. Devastated.

I can see it now - come 20/12/12 they'll skip over the episodes from November and most of December, and they give us the Christmas episodes this festive season as a goodbye.

In the words of Iris DeMent, "jes' like they say, nothing good ever lasts" ;(

Hang on, calm down. Why should BBC4 have made a decision on the following year's repeat programming by September? They hadn't last year.

Maybe we should get that well drilled yellow-clad machine to march on BBC4 and demand a meeting on our behalf.

What really bugs me (okay, not so much in these days of half-hour episodes) is that BBCi Player doesn't upgrade the TOTP version after the second showing, so we still get the original / truncated edition. There's one edition later this year containing 17 songs!!! How on Earth are they going to butcher that for pre-watershed consumption?

You'll see soon enough, it should be up before the next Sky At Night break*. It's 45 minutes long so it'll just be a fifteen minute wodge of repeats, videos and time-dishonoured out of the middle, I'd assume.

* assuming they'll still be doing that**

** which they will

Actually, Showaddywaddy do make a pretty convincing case as a yellow-clad fighting machine (I wouln't take Romeo on at any time, regardless of his attire), except for Dave Bartram, who appears to be auditioning for the unmade classic "Carry On Ted".

@wilberforce It is pronounced 'Stayton' actually. Not that anyone did until a couple of years ago
