The official opposition

Here's a fun YouTube search game for all the family (or at least the Yes It's Number One comments family) to play while we have this gap between shows - what are the best or most interesting musical performance YouTube clips taken from a British TV show other than Pops, Whistle Test or Later?

The Cheggers Plays Pop archive is much underrated. This comes up first on YT, Department S, with you know what:

Good because of what they did with the "This is a recorded message" bit near the end.

I'll nominate this, which is interesting for a variety of reasons, not least because one of them got an appearance fee merely for
lying back in a chair for three minutes:

This is my favourite clip from The Marc Show. 1977 and all that.

Hmm, let's see...apart from that unusual clip of Can performing "I Want More" on German TV, there's the L7 performance on 'The Word' where (I think) the bassist throws a currently-being-used feminine hygiene product into the audience, there's that unusual clip of Can performing "I Want More" on German TV that we all remember, the clip of Iggy Pop in transparent plastic trousers and no pants on 'The White Room'(?), Feargal Sharkey forgetting to mime live on a plane during one of Noel Edmonds' festive shindigs and, if you fancy something more sedate, you can't beat (Jilted) John Shuttleworth performing a classic non-hit on Jonathan Ross's 'Zoo' programme...

Sorry, awful bit of cutting and pasting in that last email. As an aside, I don't suppose you can count Motorhead playing "Ace Of Spades" on 'The Young Ones'?

The L7 fanny-bung throwing incident was at a live concert they gave and was never on television. The performance you are thinking of was indeed a Word appearance where the guitarist dropped trou. and showed off her woman's area to the assembled masses.

I'd like to submit this footage of The Alarm doing flop single Rescue Me on The Roxy, the performance dating from the strange period in the brief history of the show when the original concept of "old time converted cinema" fell apart completely thanks to a technicians dispute which meant they couldn't light the set and had to anchor the show from a deserted studio with already canned performances cut in.

i’d love to see any editions of “supersonic” (“cue balloons, cue snowstorms”, etc) that still exist – sadly i rarely got to see them when first broadcast as i grew up in a region administered by “westward tv” (or “backward tv” as they should have been known!) that preferred to show us local agricultural programs (the only kind they ever made themselves) and gus honeybun jumping up and down…

i’m surprised in the wake of the success of the vintage TOTP’s that ITV haven’t started showing “supersonic” again (on ITV4 of course) - after all, they’re never normally slow in jumping on the bandwagon by presenting their own downmarket versions of programmes made popular by the BBC i.e. snooker (that they almost killed-off due to over-exposure), antiques reality shows (they’ve even nicked the same presenter) and sleb family trees…

one series i was fortunate to see fairly often around that time (and would also love to see again now) was kids comedy show “pauline’s quirkes” that regularly featured teeny-bop band flintlock doing cover versions of recent pop hits… and not always the obvious stuff either (i’m sure they once recorded a version of steely dan’s “do it again”)

whilst on the subject of music shows from the past, does anyone know why channel 4 have never got around to showing old editions of "the tube" or "the word" on freeview channels such as e4 or more 4? must be something to do with copyrights i suppose - i'm sure the demand to watch such shows is out there (as these old TOTP's have proved), and even a few compilations would be better than nothing... i remember a golden period in the early 80's when i would rush home from work on friday nights in time for not only 90 minutes of "the tube", but also an extra half hour of the beeb's "oxford road show" afterwards as well (often with the same bands on - that should be resurrected too btw) - pure heaven!

Wilberforce - most editions of Supersonic are in circulation. Perhaps you might like to do a search for hungercity.org. I believe Granada still have them all in their archive, how about lobbying them too?

Wish I could remember my Tip Top fan club number. At least I've still got the badges.
